Word and Prayer: Matthew 4

Word and Prayer: Matthew 4

As I read this morning I was reminded of how Satan tempted Jesus after Jesus had fasted for 40 days and nights When we do without nourishment it makes us weak…and the same was true for Jesus. After His encounter God sent Angels to minister to His needs. Such a good reminder that He sends others to care for us sometime.

But Jesus fasted in preparation to meet up with Satan. So while He was physically weak, He was spiritually strong. I'd never noticed that Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Spirit. How could I have missed that before? Is that why He later prayed, "and lead us not into temptation..."?

I'm all over the place here...sorry.

Yet while Jesus fasted from food and drink, He KNEW God’s Word—it was hidden in His heart, and it was those words that He threw back at Satan’s tempting.

With all of our dieting and fasting in our culture, the one thing we shouldn’t stay away from is God’s Word, the Bible. Both Old and New Testament is powerful truth to stand up against Satan’s lies.

I have the worst memory of important things. I say that because while I am challenged in remembering God’s Word I can remember random facts that I’ve read in an article 3 weeks ago. So this is a lie that I’ve allowed Satan to convince me is truth about me…for YEARS. The truth is that I have an intelligent brain and I am capable of memorization, and I need to feed it more important things than random facts—I need to feed it God’s truth, over and over again, and then hide it in my heart like Jesus did so I am better prepared to face the enemies lies.

My Prayer:
Lord God, You created me and You know everything about me. You are an amazing Creator! You made me to love learning—so help me to focus my learning on things that are important and matter in the light of eternity. Help me to discern Satan’s lies and to not only know about Your Word, but to KNOW it, and to hide it in my heart, like Jesus did. I know that Satan’s lies will get craftier and sneakier, and I need the power of the Holy Spirit to fight them. Empower me Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.
